The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is an action role-playing video game and is based on the background of the novel The Lord of the Rings and its plot focuses on the campaigns fought in northern Middle-earth during the War of the Ring.

Each player will take control in the northern campaign of one of three possible heroes: Eradan, a human ranger, quick in melee and an excellent archer; Andriel, an elf specialized in offensive and defensive magical techniques, who uses a sword and staff in melee; or Farin, a heavily armored dwarf, who can use a powerful crossbow at range, but whose power lies in the mind.

It can be played alone or collaboratively with other players. The game features stronger graphic violence than other Lord of the Rings games, making it the first game in the series to be rated M by the ESRB.
