Project Zomboid is an open world survival simulation video game set in a zombie apocalypse. The player is challenged to survive as long as possible by searching houses and other buildings for resources, avoiding getting caught by zombies, as well as keeping an eye on things like hunger, exhaustion, pain, and mental stability to stay alive. .

The game uses slow-moving zombies in the traditional Romero style, although some zombies are faster than others. The game itself features two game modes: survival mode and sandbox.

In survival mode, the player is first tasked with creating a character and then surviving as long as possible after the character spawns in one of four Knox County towns.
