Dark Souls III is an action role-playing video game and the third title in the Dark Souls saga. The game takes the end of the saga for granted and presents a world (the Kingdom of Lothric) on the brink of apocalypse because of “the curse of the undead”,

and the reason why the world has not yet plunged into Total darkness is the sacrifice that many heroes and even gods made when rekindling the original flame, which is in charge of maintaining the “Age of Fire”, letting it consume their respective bodies and souls.

The player gives life to the character of the protagonist, one of the so-called “Latents”; these people are humans who managed to reach the furnace of the First Flame, tried to link it, but were consumed and turned to ash without achieving their goal. These humans are awakened when the Lords of Cinder are awakened but do not do their duty: to stay on their thrones (at Firelink Shrine) until they are sacrificed again to bind the First Flame.
